Description
Padar Island is one of the most iconic landscapes within Komodo National Park in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Although it is not home to the Komodo dragon, Padar has become the visual symbol of the park due to its dramatic hills and breathtaking panoramic views.
The island is characterized by rolling savannah-covered hills, rugged coastlines, and three distinct crescent-shaped bays with beaches of different colors — white, black, and soft pink hues. From above, the scenery looks almost surreal, making it one of the most photographed destinations in Indonesia.
Padar Island is accessible by boat from Labuan Bajo and is typically included in island-hopping tours within Komodo National Park. Its raw beauty, combined with relatively short trekking routes, makes it suitable for most travelers seeking adventure and stunning natural views.
What to See
The Iconic Summit Viewpoint
The main highlight of Padar Island is the hilltop viewpoint. After a 20–40 minute trek (depending on pace), visitors are rewarded with a spectacular 360-degree panorama of turquoise waters and uniquely shaped bays. Sunrise and sunset offer the most dramatic lighting.
Three-Colored Beaches
Padar’s rare geographical formation creates three visually distinct beaches:
- White sand beach
- Dark volcanic sand beach
- Pink-hued beach
This natural contrast makes the island exceptionally unique.
Rugged Hills & Savannah Landscape
During the dry season, the hills turn golden brown, creating a dramatic contrast with the blue ocean. In the rainy season, the island becomes lush and green.
Surrounding Archipelago Views
From the summit, you can see neighboring islands scattered across the Flores Sea, offering endless photography opportunities.
What to Do
Trekking to the Summit
The most popular activity on Padar Island is trekking. The trail consists of stairs and natural pathways with several rest points. While moderately challenging, it is manageable for most visitors with basic fitness.
Sunrise or Sunset Photography
Padar is considered one of the best sunrise spots in Indonesia. Many tours depart early in the morning to reach the summit before sunrise.
Drone & Landscape Photography
With its dramatic curves and color contrasts, Padar Island is a paradise for photographers and drone enthusiasts.
Relaxing at the Beach
After trekking, visitors can descend to one of the beaches for swimming or relaxing, depending on tour arrangements and weather conditions.
Island-Hopping Adventure
Padar is usually part of a full-day or multi-day liveaboard trip that includes other destinations such as Komodo Island and Pink Beach.
What to Buy
Padar Island itself has no permanent shops due to conservation regulations within the national park. However, visitors can purchase souvenirs in Labuan Bajo before or after their trip. Recommended items include:
- Komodo-themed handicrafts
- Local woven textiles (ikat)
- Handmade bracelets and accessories
- Komodo National Park merchandise
- Local coffee and snacks
Purchasing locally made products supports small businesses and communities in Flores.
